What Are Crowns?

Dental crowns are caps designed to cover reshaped teeth. They strengthen your tooth’s surface, ensuring better appearance and function. We make dental crowns by taking impressions of your tooth or teeth that need coverage, then creating shells that cover the tooth above your gums.

Crowns come in a variety of materials at different prices.

100% Porcelain Crowns

This is an all-white crown with no metal visible. You can get these crowns in a variety of transparencies, colours, shades, and opacities to best match your smile.

These crowns can fracture with use. Additionally, they will not mask a tooth that has significant staining.

This is a crown with no metal backing at all. In order to strengthen it, this crown is baked, then layered to match your appearance as best as possible.

This crown isn’t made to withstand being used on the teeth that get the most biting pressure, such as molars.

Porcelain and Metal Crowns

This is a strong crown with a bright white colour designed to survive the test of time. These crowns work for all parts of the mouth and are commonly used to replace teeth with along dental implants.

In order to make the crown thick enough to hide discolouration, teeth sometimes need to be thinned. Additionally, these crowns sometimes fracture, especially when made from lower-quality metals or porcelain.

Zirconia Crowns

This is one of the strongest materials available for both crowns and bridges.

Zirconia crowns can take on an opaque, “lifeless” appearance, and they can be difficult to polish without scratching the surrounding teeth.

Gold Crowns

This is the longest-used crown and a conservative go-to for many dentists. They wear just like typical enamel and last longer than any other material available. They also don’t require much of the tooth to be removed before placing the crown, ensuring minimal harm and a long survival time.

The only possible issue with gold crowns is that they have a non-white, clearly metallic look when visible in the mouth.

What Are Temporary Crowns?

A temporary crown is made to protect a tooth until your permanent crown is finished and ready. These can stay on a tooth for as long as a few months if needed.

Are Crowns Right for Me?

Crowns have been used for decades to help patients have bright, beautiful teeth and a nicely shaped smile. We can now design them digitally and make them in a very short time period.

In the event that a tooth may become damaged or fractured, we recommend that the patient considers a dental crown. However, we understand that every case is unique, and as such we won’t make recommendations until we’ve explored your situation and discussed your options with you. We will always try to use restorative treatments over invasive ones when possible.

A crown completely covers your tooth, protecting it from heat, cold, soft and hard food, and acidic drinks and fruits.

If you experience discomfort or have sensitive teeth, crowns may be a solution.
